Incorporating greenery into our offices was a defining design trend of 2021, with Pinterest data showing a three-fold increase in search for the term “biophilic office designs”. Predictions are, biophilic office design is here to stay.

The rise of biophilic office designs

Nature is a man’s best friend, but lately, modern high-rises, larger homes and sprawling indoor shopping centres have become formidable competition.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American spends only 7% of their time outdoors—with 87% of their time spent inside a building and 6% in transit.

Undoubtedly, the interaction between men and nature has dissipated due to urbanisation, deforestation and the industrial revolution. With the rise of technology helping humans to fall in love with indoor life on an even greater scale.

But the inside and outside world need not be mutually exclusive. The biophilic design trend addresses this by incorporating natural elements into interior design. Elements may include anything from raw materials to plants, shapes, light, sound, water and views.

As a result, many corporate offices are turning to interior landscaping to capitalise on the visual, physical and psychological benefits of biophilic office design.

To demonstrate, we’ve selected our top seven biophilic office designs entered into the European Interior Landscaping Organisation’s 2021 awards
